Callao, Peru, lead pollution

Description

Situated in a central location at the port of Callao, Peru, there are large deposition sites where mineral dust from mines is stockpiled on an intermediate basis prior to further transportation for loading on board ships. The mineral dust contains, among other substances, lead and other hazardous air particles. The deposition sites are situated near housing areas and schools.

Project DetailsEn el puerto del Callao, según la Dirección General de Minería del Ministerio de Energía y Minas, se exporta aproximadamente 216,700 toneladas métricas/año, provenientes en su mayoría de la Sierra Central, transportando en Ferrocarril 25% y en Camión un 75%. El problema de contaminación no solo se da en los depósitos y en el transito a los barcos, sino en toda la ruta de transporte donde se va regando el mineral. En El Callao hay varios depositos de almacenamiento de minerales metalicos.

El Estado peruano debe informar a la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) sobre las víctimas de contaminación por plomo que hay en la zona de Puerto Nuevo en Callao. En el año 2004 se realizó un dosaje de plomo en sangre a 957 niños en edad escolar y el resultado fue que los 957 niños estaban gravemente contaminados. En el año 2006 se volvio a realizar otro dosaje esta vez a 1042 niños pertenecientes a 8 colegios de la red de Plomo, igualmente el resultado arrojó que los 1042 niños estan envenenados con plomo en sangre. Posteriormente en Setiembre de 2008, el Gobierno Regional en convenio con DISA-CALLAO, realiza otro dosaje de plomo en sangre a 1581 niños y de igual formaresultaron todos contaminados.

Why? Explain briefly.Los diferentes estudios toxicologicos realizados a los pobladores, han

probado que el problema de contaminacion de plomo es critico, pese a

todo, la unica propuesta hecha para evitar la contaminacion (banda de

transporte encapsulada) no asegura la eficacia y eliminacion de los

efectos causados por los depositos.
