El Proyecto Caserones pretende extraer 150.000 toneladas anuales de mineral de cobre de la cordillera de Copiapó a 162 kilómetros al sureste de Tierra Amarilla, a 15 km de la frontera con Argentina en el cerro que le da su nombre, en la región de Atacama. Su titular es SCM Minera Lumina Copper Chile, es una empresa perteneciente a la firma japonesa Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd. (75%); y a Mitsui Bussan Copper Investment & Co., Ltd. (25%), filial de Mitsui& Co., Ltd.
