This is very dangerous as will compromise food production and peoples sovereignty in the area. Local food insecurity can be exacerbated and farmers may lose control over land and forest. <br/><br/></td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">Basic Data</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Name</td><td>Gorongosa and carbon market, Mozambique</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Country</td><td><a href="/country/mozambique">Mozambique</a></td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Province</td><td>Sofala</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Site</td><td>Gorongosa, Nhambita</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Accuracy of Location</td><td>HIGH local level</td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">Source of Conflict</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Type of Conflict (1st level)</td><td>Biodiversity conservation conflicts</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Type of Conflict (2nd level)</td><td>Land acquisition conflicts<br /> REDD/CDM</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Specific Commodities</td><td><a href='/commodity/carbon-offsets'>Carbon offsets</a><br /><a href='/commodity/land'>Land</a><br /></td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">Project Details and Actors</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Project Details</td><td class="columns">The project is called the Nhambita Community Carbon Project. The aim of the company that runs it, Envirotrade, is to capture carbon through agro-forestry, and sell carbon credits on the voluntary markets, which at this stage comprises Europe and the United States. By buying carbon credits, companies in industrialised countries can sell a positive image to their clients, clean their conscience and allow pollution of the planet. With the implementation of REDD and the purchase of carbon credits, it is expected that rich countries will continue to emit greenhouse gases, as they will be financing carbon capture projects in other locations, generally in countries in the South. <br/><br/></td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Project Area (in hectares)</td><td>11000</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Level of Investment (in USD)</td><td>1800000</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Type of Population</td><td>Rural</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Company Names or State Enterprises</td><td><a href='/company/envirotrade'>Envirotrade</a> from <a href='/country-of-company/mauritius'><small>Mauritius</small></a></td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Relevant government actors</td><td>Environment and Agriculture Ministries</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">International and Financial Institutions</td><td><a href='/institution/european-union'>European Union <small>(EU)</small></a></td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Environmental justice organisations and other supporters</td><td>UNAC, Justia Ambiental</td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">The Conflict and the Mobilization</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Intensity of Conflict (at highest level)</td><td>LATENT (no visible organising at the moment)</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">When did the mobilization begin</td><td>LATENT (no visible resistance)</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Groups Mobilizing</td><td>Farmers<br /> Social movements</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Forms of Mobilization</td><td>Creation of alternative reports/knowledge<br /> Arguments for the rights of mother nature<br /> Information sharing</td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">Impacts</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Environmental Impacts</td><td><strong>Visible: </strong>Biodiversity loss (wildlife, agro-diversity), Desertification/Drought, Global warming, Deforestation and loss of vegetation cover<br /><strong>Potential: </strong>Fires</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Socio-economic Impacts</td><td><strong>Visible: </strong>Increase in Corruption/Co-optation of different actors, Lack of work security, labour absenteeism, firings, unemployment, Loss of traditional knowledge/practices/cultures</td></tr></tbody></table></div></div><div class="horipane"><div class="title active">Outcome</div><div class="content"><table class="table"><tbody><tr><td class="fld">Project Status</td><td>In operation</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Do you consider this as a success?</td><td>No</td></tr><tr><td class="fld">Why?
