La transnacional Newmont, una de las mineras de oro mas importantes del mundo, cerró su proyecto La Joya ubicada a unos kilometros de la ciudad de Oruro. Mas de 15 años de funcionamiento dejaron pasivos ambientales denunciados regularmente por las comunidades que habitan las riberas del rio Desaguadero. Una de las medidas de cierre adoptadas por la empresa fue dejar que el rajo de la mina se llenara de agua sin mas medidas que la neutralizacion de la acidez mediante adición de cal.
