The indigenous people of Atalaya in Ucayali went on strike in August 2018 against damage from extractivist projects, a new waterway, the arrival of settlers and land grabbing. and lack of title to their own lands.

El río Ucayali se forma en la confluencia de los ríos Tambo y Urubamba. Como señalaba Marc Gavaldá en 2011 [1] en este punto se encuentra la ciudad emergente de Atalaya, que con sus 35.000 habitantes, que había duplicado su población en la última década. En su puerto, cada tarde desembarcan lanchas de las compañías petroleras que exploran y perforan los hidrocarburos del bajo Urubamba. Centenares de trabajadores con diferentes uniformes agotan todas las plazas hoteleras. Son los trabajadores de las subcontratas de Repsol, Pluspetrol y Petrobras, que regresan de los transportes fluviales y de las campañas sísmicas, selva adentro.
