Lead poisoning by Shanghang Huaqiang Battery Company, Fujian, China

In 2008-2009, villagers repeatedly protested against a battery plant which polluted the air, water and soil of the local environment and sickened more than 100 children with excessive blood lead in Shanghang, Fujian.


Shanghang is a county in Fujian province, bordering Guangdong Province to the southwest. It is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Longyan. Shanghang County is also the base of Zijin Mining Group [1]. Shanghang Huaqiang Battery Co. Ltd. is one of the largest professional manufacturers of Electrode-Plate and Valve Regulated Sealed Lead-Acid batteries in China. In July 2005, the company moved from its original location in Quanzhou City to Jiaoyang Industrial Park in Shanghang County. [2]

The company occupies the total compound of 201,000 Square meters. The total investment is ca. 120 million RMB (USD around 17.65 million, USD 1=CNY 6.8). The standard workshop with 36,000 square meter and the 17,000 square meter offices, buildings dormitory, living quarters are in use. There were 60 supervisors and 24 technicians among the total of 1000 company employees.

Briefly explain:The factory was shut down but there is forcible migration of children and their families to avoid heavy pollution, while the abandoned factory is still used for piling toxic industrial waste.
