Nitta Gelatin India Ltd (NGIL), India

Description

Nitta Gelatin India Ltd (NGIL), one of the most successful Indo-Japanese industrial ventures between Nitta Gelatin Inc (NGI), Japan and Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) is a leading global manufacturer of gelatin, ossein, di calcium phosphate and collagen peptide. Incorporated as Kerala Chemicals and Proteins in 1975, the name was changed to Nitta Gelatin India in 2008.

The plant in Kathikudam discharges around 90 tonnes of waste everyday to the Chalakkudy River. According to the local protestors, the company has flouted all the laws and do not possess a license from Kadukutty Panchayat for the past three years.

On March 23, 2008, an action Council was formed with Jayan Pattath as chairman and Appu Kuttippat as gen convenor against the pollution. On March 26, a dharna (sit in protest) was staged in front of the factory and inaugurated by Varhese Thoduparambil, the leader of Karshaka Munnettam, Muriyad. Since then Kathikudam has been witnessing protests in various forms.

In August a long protest went on for some two weeks, convened by several organizations. Over 100 organisations have in fact already expressed their solidarity to the protest and to the residents for ‘land, air and water’.
